Hola: Spanish Dialect Translator

Hola is a mobile-first experience designed to bridge communication gaps among Spanish speakers from different countries by translating phrases and expressions between unique Spanish dialects.

Problem/Context

Spanish is spoken in over 20 countries, with regions developing unique dialects shaped by history, culture, social context, and other local languages. Variations in pronunciation, tone, and vocabulary can drastically alter meaning from one country/region to another.

As a result, communication between Spanish speakers from different regions can come with some challenges. Words and phrases that are common in one place may have different meanings in another. This impacts everyday interactions, especially in travel and professional settings.

Quick example here: The word “Guagua” means bus in Dominican Republic while it means child in Argentina.

Existing tools focus on translating between languages, but none address dialect to dialect differences within the same language. The need for reliable dialect-focused translations is palpable, especially in moments when time and context are critical.

Hola provides a different approach to language translation: dialects will no longer be left out of the equation!

Key Findings from User Research

Initially, I explored multiple directions for this project, including a dialect-learning interactive platform (think Duolingo) and a Spanish dialect dictionary.

However, through conversations with other Spanish speakers in my network and personal experience I learned that users don’t approach dialects the same way they approach learning a new language. Because Spanish is already a shared foundation, the real need is to adapt quickly.

Potential users expressed a stronger need for:

  • Quick, on-the-go translations in real-life situations, specially when traveling
  • Confidence in professional settings, such as presentations or meetings set in different countries

Core Functionalities

These insights helped define a focused set of core functionalities:

  • Offering quick-reference guides for common scenarios such as greetings, travel, and every day basics
  • Supporting integration into professional tools such as a PowerPoint add-on for real-time language verification before presentations
