Isla Bonita: Cruise Planning

Isla Bonita is a digital platform that simplifies group cruise planning through personalized, intuitive experiences.

Context

Group trips can be exciting, but planning can become stressful as more people, preferences, schedules, and budgets are added to the mix.

Travelers typically approach planning in two ways: through a travel agency or through self-planning. Travel agencies can reduce some of the coordination work, but often offer limited options at higher costs. Self-planning allows for more flexibility and control, but requires more time and effort to organize.

Isla Bonita explores a reimagined cruise travel planning experience focused on personalization and automation, helping users navigate a wide range of options across accommodations, activities, and entertainment to find experiences that suit all types of travelers.

Design Approach

This project focuses on a centralized cruise search experience that brings multiple tropical destination cruise lines under one roof, making it easier for users to compare and choose options.

The experience is designed to accommodate a wide range of users, from first-time cruisers and traditional planners to more experienced travelers.

The initial core experience focused on:

  • Simplifying the process of browsing large amounts of travel options
  • Reducing effort when comparing routes, pricing, and amenities across cruise lines
  • Balancing guided recommendations with search and filtering flexibility

Expanding the concept: Group travel

User interviews and research revealed that while many travel platforms support individual booking, group planning is often disconnected and self-managed through long group chats, planning meetings, shared documents, and one person acting as the main coordinator carrying the pressure of making decisions that make everyone happy.

This insight led to the most distinct functionality of this platform: The Cruise Quiz, which translates answers into personalized recommendations for faster decision-making and making sure everyone in the group feels included.

Feature Highlight: Cruise Quiz

The Cruize Quiz is a guided experience designed for both individuals and groups that collects travel preferences and turns them into personalized cruise recommendations.

Step 1: Trip Setup

Users begin by entering the basics of their trip, including:

  • Occasion
  • Who is traveling
  • Preferred travel dates
  • Trip vibe
  • Preferred activities
  • Dealbreakers

Step 2: Travel Type

At the end of the quiz, users choose whether they are traveling solo or with a group.

  • Solo travelers: Move directly to results (Step 4)
  • Group planners: Invite others by entering email addresses

Step 3: Group Preferences

Group members receive the quiz with the same set of questions, but certain details are already defined by the trip initiator (the occasion, who is coming, and the overall date options).

The group just has to focus on selecting their preferred date from the options, trip vibe, activities, and any dealbreakers.

Step 4: Results

Once responses are submitted, travelers receive three personalized cruise options by email.

  • Solo travelers: Redirected to book through the cruise provider’s website
  • Group members: Review choices and vote on a preferred option

Step 5: Final Selection (Group)

After all group votes are submitted, everyone receives the selected cruise option and a direct link to book.
